Seed Saving Series: Seed Cleaning and Processing

Thursday, October 10, 2019, 5:30 PM

Even after seeds have been harvested and had an initial winnowing in the field, they may require further processing using techniques such as screening or fanning. We will demonstrate these final stages of seed cleaning using both low tech methods with common household tools as well as Farm Table’s seed shed equipment. Bring seeds you've harvested, and we'll demonstrate various seed-cleaning techniques. The class will also include winter squash seed harvest and extraction; seed storage and record-keeping; garden planning for next year; and time for any of your questions. Kathleen Plunkett-Black of Plum Creek Seeds will teach the series of classes. Kathleen is a lifelong gardener and grows all the vegetables to feed her family year-round. She grows her own seeds for over 200 varieties of vegetables, grains, dry beans, flowers, and herbs. Kathleen has been an active member of the Seed Savers Exchange for over thirty years and has led many workshops on gardening and seed saving. She is passionate about teaching and passing on the skills of subsistence gardening and seed saving.
