Seed Saving Series: Plant Selection, Care of Maturing Plants, Harvesting Tomato Seeds

Thursday, August 8, 2019, 5:30 PM

By midsummer some crops are ready to harvest, while others are still in the early stages of seed growth. We will look at how to select for the healthiest parent plants, how to care for those plants as they mature beyond the “veggies-to-eat” stage we're familiar with, and how to harvest mature seeds. The class will include hands-on demonstration of tomato seed extraction and fermentation. Please note: This class is the second in a series of four. The next will be held on September 12; titled "Fall Seed Harvest and Cleaning," you can register here. Kathleen Plunkett-Black of Plum Creek Seeds will teach the series of classes. Kathleen is a lifelong gardener and grows all the vegetables to feed her family year-round. She grows her own seeds for over 200 varieties of vegetables, grains, dry beans, flowers, and herbs. Kathleen has been an active member of the Seed Savers Exchange for over thirty years and has led many workshops on gardening and seed saving. She is passionate about teaching and passing on the skills of subsistence gardening and seed saving.
