Native Nations of Minnesota

Tuesday, April 9, 2019, 11:30 PM

Mitakuyepi (My relatives)! Welcome to Native Nations of Minnesota. We are living, learning, and working in a particular place with a long, fascinating, troubling, and frequently unknown story. I encourage you to make connections between this course and your own lives. Learning more about the experiences of the indigenous communities from this place will provide you opportunities and experience to consider the perspectives of both indigenous and settler communities wherever you live and travel. Certainly, we won’t be able to cover every facet of Dakota and Ojibwe history and culture in a single semester but this course will provide important context for Native experiences and illuminate Native perspectives on their varied experiences. Iyekiyapiwin Darlene St. Clair, Associate Professor and Director of the Multicultural Resource Center at St. Cloud State University, will develop educators' core knowledge of the history, culture and politics of Minnesota's Native Nations.  Each session will feature historical and cultural study along with discussion of how to integrate the new material into teachers’ current lessons. Teachers may register for one class or the entire course. Completing the entire course will provide curriculum for a semester-long secondary school course.   The course is intended for any educator and may be especially relevant for Grade 6 MN Studies teachers, Grade 7 US History teachers,  high school US History teachers, all elementary teachers and arts teachers.  You can choose to attend the entire series, or choose one or more sessions from the series.  If you wish to register for the entire series, select any session at checkout and choose the appropriate rate for the entire series.  If you wish to register for more than one session but not the enitre series, you will have to register for each session separately.  Sessions include: September 25, 2018: 4:30pm-6:30pm October 9, 2018: 4:30pm-6:30pm October 23, 2018: 4:30-6:30pm November 13, 2018: 4:30-6:30pm November 27, 2018: 4:30pm-6:30pm December 11, 2018: 4:30pm-6:30pm January 8, 2019: 4:30pm-6:30pm January 22, 2019: 4:30pm-6:30pm February 5, 2019: 4:30pm-6:30pm February 19, 2019: 4:30pm-6:30pm March 19, 2019: 4:30pm-6:30pm April 9, 2019: 4:30pm-6:30pm
