Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church (haumc.org), 511 Groveland, will host “Faith to Save the Planet: An Evening with Brian McLaren” on Sunday, May 12 at 7:00pm. This free evening event will inspire attendees to respond to climate change from a faith perspective. Brian McLaren will deliver a keynote about responding to climate change to begin the evening. Heralded by the New York Times as “Provocative and powerful,” McLaren is a passionate advocate for “a new kind of Christianity” on issues like climate change. He reminds us “Global warming is a matter of science, economics, and politics, but it is a spiritual, moral, religious issue - a matter of the head but also the heart, and we who are people of faith must acknowledge that we need to be part of the solution but too often many of us have been part of the problem. …We people of faith need to learn and passionately tell a new and healing story, a bigger, better, more gracious story.” After his keynote, McLaren will moderate a panel of local leaders who are helping Minnesotans respond to the worldwide challenge of climate change through science and faith. The Climate Change Panelists are: - Mark Seeley, Climatologist; Professor Emeritus, University of Minnesota- Kelly Sherman-Conroy, Minister of Social Justice & Advocacy, Nativity Lutheran Church- Halston Sleets, Board of Directors, Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy- Alina Yaman, Project Coordinator, Minnesota Interfaith Power & Light This event also features:- "Action Tables" of local environmental organizations to engage with and get you activated.- A pop-up bookstore featuring environmental justice materials.- A concession stand with light refreshments.
