American Ballet Theatre
with live orchestra
American Ballet Theatre, one of the world’s finest classical ballet companies, returns with this popular story ballet based on choreography by Marius Petipa and Alexander Gorsky, with staging by Kevin McKenzie and Susan Jones, and music by Ludwig Minkus. Never before staged in full at Northrop, this ballet in three acts is based on Miguel de Cervantes’ remarkable and humorous tale of romance and chivalry. Follow the misadventures of Don Quixote and his squire, Sancho Panza, as they aid the spirited maiden Kitri and her charming amour, Basil. From the bravura dancing of the fiery toreador Espada to the colorful caravan of gypsies, the stage explodes in this feast of choreographic fireworks.
“The Ballet Theatre dancers have exactly the right tone of high-camp enjoyment to make the audience relish every finger-snapping, high-jumping moment." (Roslyn Sulcas, The New York Times)

Notes from Director of Programming
American Ballet Theatre is the most important touring American ballet company with an unparalleled repertoire and exquisite dancers at all ranks of the company. I was so lucky to see ABT’s mixed repertory performance at Northrop in April 2019 and I’m thrilled to have a chance to work again with this amazing company that I presented annually while I was at the Kennedy Center. As we were working through the repertory options for their program, I learned that ABT was planning to perform Don Quixote as part of their Met season. I’m looking forward to Northrop being a regular tour stop for these incredible dancers.
