Summer Seed Saving

Wednesday, August 8, 2018, 12:30 AM

Summer Seed Saving:  Plant Selection, Care of Maturing Plants, Harvesting Tomato Seeds As midsummer moves towards fall, some crops are ready to harvest while others are still in the early stages of seed growth. We will look at how to select for the healthiest parent plants, how to care for those plants as they mature beyond the “veggies to eat” stage we're familiar with, and how to harvest mature seeds. The class will include hands-on demonstrations of tomato seed extraction and fermentation. Presenter: Kathleen Plunkett-Black of Plum Creek Seeds is a lifelong gardener. She grows all the vegetables needed to feed her family year-round. Kathleen grows her own seeds for over 200 varieties of vegetables, grains, dry beans, flowers, and herbs. She has been an active member of the Seed Savers Exchange for over 30 years and has led many workshops on gardening and seed saving. She is passionate about teaching and passing on the skills of subsistence gardening and seed saving.
