An American in Stalin’s Russia: Discovering the Lost Photo Archive of Major Martin Manhoff
The Museum of Russian Art is pleased to present An American in Stalin’s Russia: Discovering the Lost Photo Archive of Major Martin Manhoff In 2016, historian Douglas Smith stumbled upon a remarkable collection: thousands of color slide photographs and films taken by an American military attaché in the US embassy in Moscow at the height of the Cold War. The archive had been forgotten for over half a century, until Mr Smith catalogued and published highlights of it online with Radio Liberty, which became an international sensation viewed by millions around the world. The Major Martin J. Manhoff collection offers a fascinating window onto Russia in the waning years of Stalin’s Russia that presents the Soviet Union as never seen before. In this talk illustrated by dozens of color photographs, Mr Smith tells the story of Major Manhoff and his photographs, a riveting tale of international intrigue, espionage, and one man’s great artistic passion. ABOUT THE PRESENTER Douglas Smith is an award-winning historian and translator and the author of five books on Russia, most recently Rasputin: Faith, Power, and the Twilight of the Romanovs. He has traveled widely in Russia over the past thirty years, worked as a Soviet affairs analyst at Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, and once served as an interpreter for the late President Reagan. In addition to his research into the Manhoff archive, he is currently writing a book on US famine relief in Russia in the 1920s titled The Russian Job: The Forgotten Story of How America Saved Russia from Ruin.
